FM Raider Gundam build retrospective

This is build number 9 for 2022. As with the Calamity, I consider it a small miracle that this particular design even exists in this scale, and it’s pretty well done to boot! My only criticism is that this kit is riddled with some pretty bad mold lines, some in really inconvenient places:

  • On the light green of the “claws”
  • The purple piece near the neck
  • The biceps, this is a pretty bad one as it intersects some detail and I ended up deleting it

Painting

Apart from the unique Raider decals, I did not end up using the stock “warning” decals design. The red/white ones are from AXIS Modeling Research, and I can’t recommend these enough, the print is very good and the red is still visible over black. I also used decals from both Delpidecal and Evolution Studio. It’s my first time using the EVO decals, the quality surprised me and I would definitely use them again. The print is less bold and as a result small print comes out better, but if you want the whitest whites then the Delpi version is better for you.

The decals on the shoulder are from Delpi’s original decals, but I didn’t like the white lines so I trimmed them off.

I kinda agonized about the “pale green” aspect of the colour scheme. The parts come in a kind of minty Jegan green which I feel is a bit too harsh for my taste.

Black – Mr Color GX Ueno Black base coat, I added some White and a bit of red for highlights

Yellow – White Primer, followed by Mr Color Orange + bit of Fluorescent Orange preshade, followed by light coat of Mr Color Orange Yellow + tiny bit of Orange

Red – White Primer, followed by Hull Red preshade on edges, then starter Orange Yellow + bit of Fluorescent Yellow, finally coat of Mr Color GX Harmann Red.

Purple – Mr Color Purple (70%) + Neutral Grey (30%). White added for highlights.

Pale Green – Grey Primer followed by Mr Color Pale Green (60%) + Neutral Grey (40%). White added for shading. The Pale Green itself is very thin and the end result was a very light pale-ish green/grey that’s quite subtle.

Grey – Mr Color German Grey base coat, I then added Neutral Grey for shading.

Internals – Gaianotes Starbright Iron

High gloss internals (shield gun etc) – SMS Stainless Steel over gloss black

Unlike the Calamity there’s are only a few extra details that need to be painted in, the only main one being the three thrusters on the Mjolnir. Rest are kinda optional in my opinion, there are the usual pipes on the back of the knees and ankles, and there are some molded piston on the cannons on the claws.

Assembly Stream

If you want to watch the replay of me building it check the video below. I had a couple of close calls with the assembly and had to do some last minute spot fixes, but thankfully no broken or lost parts.
